The Hebden Bridge Local History Society was formed in 1949 as a section of the Hebden Bridge Literary and Scientific Society. The Society became an independent organisation in 2021 and is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered with the Charities Commission No.1196787. The Society has over 200 members and is administered by a Management Committee which meets every other month.

The Society is a member of the South Pennine History Group along with Marsden History Group, and Saddleworth Historical Society. The group seeks to co-operate to research, record and promote all aspects of the history of the South Pennine region and to make the results available to the wider community.
